Poker Tree #2: Part One
19 January 2010
Follow the path through the Poker Tree to see how your route compares to that of the pros’.
Poker Tree

Welcome to the second ever Poker Tree, a simple creation that allows you to work your way through a hand of poker, taking whatever route you please.

To play is quick and easy, just read the set-up below and then select/click the option which you wish to choose. The page will then escort you to the next number, and thus scenario. Once you’ve completed your route, post your chosen path in the comments box at the foot of the page to see how your route compares to those of the Black Belt Poker readers.

As before, Nik’s Golden Route is the only path that leads to victory. This is not a results orientated process, but if your decisions match that of an online pro of Nik Persaud’s ilk, then you’re probably not doing too much wrong.

Next week, Black Belt Poker will publish the thoughts of the community, as well as the chosen routes of some of the Black Belt Pros.

This week’s Poker Tree see us return to the $1/2 cash tables for a spot of six-max No Limit Hold’em.

Game: Six-max $1/2 NLH cash

History: The game has been playing for about two or three orbits, in which time there have been few big pots. The villain has nicked a blind, and won a pot from continuation betting, but apart from that, has been relatively quiet. Hero won one pot earlier when he eliminated a short stack with kings. The rest of the table have been equally subdued.

Villain MP ($200) – 23/15/3.1 – You have 743 hands on Villain and know that he raises continuation bets 21 percent of the time. He doesn’t stand out as a maniac player, but at the same time, is far from being regarded as a rock and is capable of making moves.

Hero SB ($200) – 18/13/2 – Hero is a good, solid player who is currently four-tabling. He plays most nights and churns out a small profit. He continuation bets 80 percent of flops and has an UTG range of 5-5+, A-8+, & suited connectors.

UTG = Hero ($236)

57.     You die a gruesome death. No limping!

58.    Congratulations, you have found Nik’s Golden Route and although performing cartwheels inside, have taken victory like a gentleman. You are both good at poker, and courteous at the table, which makes you better than Phil Hellmuth.

59.    Nik Persaud would never give a rubdown, especially if his opponent were big. Go back to the beginning until you have learned how to accept victory gracefully.

I think this difficult decision in this hand is the river and is very dependent on what we think of our opponent. I think he just about aggressive enough to bluff this enough of the time meaning, along with the pot odds we're getting, makes it call. However, it's not easy because if he's a decent player, he must know that we have a hand by now and will probably be calling the river. Despite this, the high check-raise percentage tips the decision towards a call.

andriena nutt posted on 25 Jan, 3:30am I did it and it worked out that the villian had QQ...... obviously ive mde a wrong turn here, but there is a few ways id play it depending on the feel at the time.... i would do 4 example :
2
4
15
24
this way im playing aggresive obv, yet if hes got the draw, then it gives him less chance to hit it with one card to come, also if hes got K10, Q10, J10.... we r massive favourite, and also could have underpair, 99/88 even.....however....
I could be inclined to :
2
4
15
21
29......reason if i smell something funny..... i would prob take this option more often if i had played reguarly with the player etc... thre are much better spots to get ur money in other than top pair, even with an ace kicker, if the viliian is what u have described.... a lot of ppl wth smooth call with high pairs rather than raise.... as to get the set up like this ......
I could also play it like simon except do 58 instead....thing is villian has different holding cards if i play that way. obviously that makes it the right play im assuming..... however I try not to go broke with one pair in a cash game, as I feel there are so many more better spots u can get ur money in, which will make you bigger and better favourites....

My route would have been 2,4,15,20 for the following reasons:

I choose 2 to raise preflop as i will do with most hands like this and when i hit top pair on the flop im going to c-bet for 2/3rds of the pot given that there are now flush draws on the board. The villan is also likely to raise a c=bet if he thinks i have AK-AJ or a mid pair amd to hope to take the pot there and then. My call here is mainly to disguse my hand and give the impression that i am drawing or floating the flop. The 2 on the turn is a brick but the fact that he leads out means that i am now put him on an overpair and fold.
