It’s important in poker to feel like you’re developing. When I look back, I always want to feel like I’m twice the player I was last year. I remember when the £30 rebuy tournament on a Sunday evening at the Brighton Grosvenor was somewhat intimidating and I was certainly not that relaxed when I played my first GUKPT. I’m by no means a regular in the £5,000-plus entry tournaments these days, but I’ve played a few, and during the London EPT this year allowed myself a moment to smile and reflect on how comfortable I felt in the field: just casually sitting there playing an EPT and munching on some sushi - I’d basically become durrrr.
As fun as that was, there was, of course, a serious job to do, and I couldn’t claim to be any kind of durrrr unless I accumulated some chips. My table wasn’t the softest with Kevin MacPhee, Andrew Feldman and a few other pros outnumbering the ‘spots’ quite considerably. I ran reasonably well though and made a pretty hefty call-down with top pair in a three-bet pot. The guy winced when I made the river call and I knew I was good.
